This morning it came to me that many times we come to God and seek Him; we seek Him passionately, desperately...for a while but give up along the way if we think there are many challenges or it is taking too long.

I remember when I lost a diamond earring a couple of years ago. I had lost it at the Philadelphia airport and discovered it when I got home at 2:30 in the morning. My husband went back to the airport purposed to find it at all costs. The cleaners had swept the airport and stacked the trashbags outside. They searched high and low and then they decided to search the trashbags. (yak!) They went through each one and believe it or not, they found it! Persistence, determination...the will to find!

As I reflected on this, I thought of some situations in the Bible. In Luke 19:1-10, we have the story of zacchaeus, the wealthy tax collector. He was short in desperation to find Jesus, He climbed up the sycamore tree and the Lord looked up and said 'Zacchaeus, come down.' That day way his day of salvation. In addition, Zaccheaus said that if he had cheated young or old that he would return it.  That day was the turning point in his life  as Jesus was invited not only to his house, but into His heart!

The woman with the issue of blood pressed through the crowds against all odds. She was focussed, she know who she was looking for and what she was looking for and she touched the hem of his garment and the Lord Jesus felt power leave His body. The rest is history. There is also the woman with the spirit of infirmity in Luke 13:10-13.

In Mark 13:10-13, we see Bartimaeus. He was blind and knew Jesus could heal him so as Jesus passes by He shouted 'Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on Me'. The people told him to be quiet. The more they tried to hush him up, the louder he shouted. As a result, Jesus STOPPED and asked him what he wanted..........and he was healed.

Do not allow people, shame, disgrace, length of time, physical stature, status....to distract you from seeking. Do what it takes. You have to know who you are seek and when He could be found! When we seek Him, we will find Him, when we search for Him with all our hearts! father, we pray for the will to make it so!

It is only by seeking God that we can become righteous. He is the God of all Righteousness; The Righteous one. When we seek Him with all our hearts, we become more and more like Him. He takes us from glory to glory. In Genesis 6:9 we read that Noah was a just man, perfect in His generation. Noah walked with God. In Genesis 7:1, the Lord says to Noah 'I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.'

What was the key to Noah being righteous? Noah walked with God. Noah spent time with God. Noah was influenced by God. Noah was transformed by God. In a society where there was wickedness and corruption. The Lord was sorry that He had made man...and He was grieved in His heart. Genesis 6:5-6.  Yet in the midst of that squalor, corruption and violence, there was one man who was righteous. One man who chose not to be corrupt but to walk with God and He found favour in God's eyes.

Will God say of me 'I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation? Phil.2:12-14 reads 'work out your own salvation with fear and trembling......that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and peverse generation among whom you shine like lights in the world holding fast the word of life....'  To seek God, we need to study and live out the word of God. In other words, we have to walk our talk. James 1:22-25 tells us to be doers of the word, not hearers only, decieving ourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in the mirror; for he observes himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what He does.' John 13 :17 reads 'If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Let me quickly mention some men recognized in the Bible:

  • Job - 'Job was blameless and upright, one who feared God and shunned evil' Job 1:1
  • Joseph - Joseph prospered in all he did because the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him. Gen 39:23
  • Enoch - Enoch walked with God. Gen. 5:22
  • David - David was a man after God's own heart - Acts 13:22
  • Saul - '...He is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before the Gentiles..' -Acts 9:15
  • Cornelius - a devout man and one who feared God and had a good reputation among all the Jews Acts 10:22.
  • Daniel - These men said ' we shall not find any charge against this daniel unless we find it against Him concerning his God.'  Daniel 6:5

What testimonies!

What can be said of me? What can be said of you?

What have you invested your time and energy in seeking? Jer. 2:13 says :

'My people have forsaken Me,The Fountain of living waters and built for themselves cisterns, cisterns that cannot hold water.'

Many times we invest so much time and enery in seeking and building that which is temporal.  Maybe we are going through a phase in our life that has distracted us from God. May God give us the grace to refocus and not be weary.

We become so preoccupied with things of the world system and not building on that which is eternal. We are consumed with seeking how to create wealth not seeking the One who has given us the power to create to create wealth. We invest in seeking so many things in this material world - clothes, cars, finance, social status..... - As we read Matthew 6:25-34, we see that people are anxious about life, what we eat or what we drink, or about clothes...what we put on..but we are encouraged 'to seek, aim at and strive after, first of all His kingdom and His righteousness, His way of doing and being right and then all these things taken together will be given to us.'

Until we put God first in everything, we will keep building cisterns that cannot hold water.  Psalm 127:1 says that unless the Lord builds the city, they labour in vain that build it. Unless the Lord watches the city, the watchman watches but in vain. Luke 9:25 asks 'what should it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?

Let us seek the One who supplies all our needs and not only takes care of our earthly needs but our spiritual and eternal needs.

The key to successful living is that we may seek Him

The key to successful living is that we may  know Him.....

God wants us to seek not that which is temporal but that which is eternal,  for His glory.

As we seek God, it would be good to ask 'how do we seek God?' In Psalm 42:1-2 David writes 'as the deer panteth after the waterbrooks so my soul panteth after You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God....'  In Psalm 63:1 he writes 'O God, You are my God; early will I seek you; my soul thirsts for You, My flesh longs for you in a dry and thirsty land where no water is....'  In Psalm 84:2, the psalmist writes 'My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart  and my flesh cry out for the living God.'

The song writer writes :

'You along are my strength, my shield.

To You alone may my spirit yield yield.

You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship You.'

Many of us are satisfied with being saved but that aspect of passion...a deep yearning and longing for God is missing. We love God ...yes...but do our hearts and flesh CRY OUT for the living God...CRY OUT for Jesus? Do we feel that longing, that yearning for Him. If you don't talk to Him for one day, does it matter?  Do you yearn for daily, constant fellowship with Jesus? How cluttered are our lives with other things we are seeking? Do we seek God first? Is He paramount in our decision making? Do we seek God in everything we do?

Jesus said in the sermon on the mount 'Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled'- Matthew 5:6.

The Lord wants us to seek Him with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength. Jeremiah 29:13 says we 'will seek Him and find Him when we search for Him with all our heart.' Deut 4:29 adds 'and with all our soul.'

Father, cultivate a conscious hunger and thirst in us for you. Quicken that hunger and thirst in us that only You can fill. 'Like the woman at the well,  I was seeking for things that could not satisfy but then I heard the Saviour saying, 'draw from My well that never will run dry'. Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up Lord. Come and quench this thirsting of my soul. Bread of Heaven feed me till I thirst no more, fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole'.

We need to seek God more through His Word, fellowship, prayer among other things.

The Lord wants us to seek Him Him with a hunger, a deep thirst, a spirit of expectation and a great passsion. Let us purpose to be passionate seekers for Jesus.

In a previous blog, I asked the question who is God to me? This was followed by a long list of who God is. He is my Saviour, healer, provider.....

As I meditated on seeking God this morning, the thought came to me that God cannot not be compartmentalized. If He is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all. He is Lord God all mighty. He is the all powerful God. We cannot say that He is God of our health but not God of our heart or our finances. It is only when we seek God as God, that we will see Him as God. Many times we underestimate His power. We think some things are too big or too small for God. God is appealing to us not to insult His souverinty! He is God of all. He wants us to surrender everything to Him. He says 'I am the Lord God Almighty, besides me there is no other.' In Genesis 17:1, the Lord declares, 'I am God Almighty. Isaiah says in Isaiah 47:4, 48:2, 51:15, 54:5 'The Lord Almighty is His name'

Some times we limit God and by so doing unknowingly find 'alternate gods'. In the Old Testament, we see there were different Gods. Some cultures today have the same. In 1 Kings 18, Baal was the God of fire. We hear of the God of light, wind, fertility and thunder.

There are cases when some people have waited on God for so long, that they shift their dependence and sometimes decide to do God'd work for Him. Sometimes, we become our own God. Isaiah 55:8 states 'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,' declares the Lord. Some Christians go to church on Sunday and go to the witch doctors, the 'medicine men' for things they think God cannot do or things they feel He is taking too long to handle.

In Hebrews 11, we find people who trusted God as Lord God Almighty, who are referred to as people of faith. What we believe is what we do. When we run from our enemies, we are showing how weak our God is. When we start depending on people and not God for our wellbeing, we show how insufficent our God is. David says in Psalm 62:5, 'My soul waiteth patiently on you O Lord for my help comes from you'

Troubles, circumstances, stress and pressures make us lose focus of who God is. Problems with work, family life, ministry, finances, children marriage or being single, if not taken to the Lord in prayer can cause us to shift our focus. Psalm 55:22 says 'cast your cares upon Him and He will sustain you'. Take your problems to the Lord and He will solve them for you. Seek Him regarding that which concerns you. 1 Peter 5:7 says 'cast your cares upon Him for He cares for you;' We have a God who cares for us; we seek a God who cares for us for He confirms this in Isaiah 43:2 'when you go through.....I will deliever you for I the Lord am with you to deliver you' say the Lord.

May we seek the Lord God Almighty who will never forsake us nor fail us because He created us for HIS glory. Deut 4:29 says 'You shall seek the Lord your God and you will find Him when you search for Him with all your heart and soul.
